The most exciting part of a staged sword fight might be the moment when the hero pulls his weapon out of its sheath. What is a sword or a sheath?Ī sheath is a protective case for a knife or a sword. To recap, a typical sword’s hilt consists of three components: the guard, grip and pommel. Sword pommels are found in a wide range of styles, some of which include disks, crescents, wheels, rings and even animal heads. The scabbard chape is not to be confused with the chappe, a French term – rain-guard in English – on the sword itself, a fitting at the top of the blade in late medieval weapons, just below the crossguard of the hilt. The reinforced end of a single-piece metal scabbard can also be called the chape.
